Frequently Asked Questions
Which organizations are allowed to be sponsored?
To be considered at a meeting, the organization must be in the Grosse Pointe area. It must be a non-profit organization recognized as a 501(c)(3) that serves Grosse Pointe and the surrounding area.
How long do the meetings last?
Meetings start at 6:30 pm and are done within an hour. We also plan to have a social time before each meeting to get to know other members, answer questions about the organization, and thank those who want to serve the community.
Each meeting will open with a five-minute update on how the funds donated at the previous meeting were used by the winning charity.
How is the organization that receives the donation chosen?
Any member may nominate a local organization for consideration. Three organizations will be randomly selected from all nominations submitted. The member who nominated each selected charity will give a three-minute presentation about their organization and why it should receive the donation, followed by a five-minute question and answer period.
Each member present may vote (by ballot) for one of the three charities. The charity with the most votes will be the recipient of that evening’s donation.
What are the guidelines for nominations?
- All members can nominate a charity
- A charity not selected at one meeting may be submitted again at a subsequent meeting
- A winning charity is eligible for future consideration after one year (four meetings) has passed
How do I vote if I cannot attend the meeting?
You cannot vote if you are not at the meeting. We can only count the votes of members who are present – no proxy voting is allowed.
However, all members can send a blank, signed check with a trusted friend to the meeting. They will write in the name of the charity that is chosen and give it to the charity on your behalf.
You will also receive an email telling you the name of the winning charity if you were unable to attend the meeting.
How much do I donate and when?
Each member will write a check for $100 to the winning charity or donate through the charity’s website. All members agree to donate to the chosen charity within seven days.
Is my contribution tax deductible? How do I get my tax forms?
Yes, your contribution is tax deductible. Checks are written directly to the local organization, NOT to 100 Women Grosse Pointe. Your tax forms will be sent to you directly from the organization that receives your contribution.
Will I be contacted by the charities for future donations?
No. Any sponsored non-profit is not allowed to create, sell or distribute a list with your contact information. They are not allowed to solicit you for further contributions. If this were to happen, the organization would no longer be considered at future meetings.
Can I bring a friend to the meeting who is not signed up?
Of course you can! However, to vote they need to sign up and provide a commitment form prior to the start of the meeting.
